For Sale one of my pride and joy Jaguars. I have owned this car since 1997 and its been maintained regardless of cost or time. It was mint condition with 101000 miles on the clock when I bought it with a full service history. In the last 12 years I have only done 35K most of which was done in the earlier years. So its averaged less than 3000 miles per year over the last 12 years. This Jaguar along with others I own were bought to do Wedding Car Hire which I stopped doing after the 2007 season. From then this Jag was parked in my garage. Between August 2007 and January 2009 she had only covered 220 miles as I don’t have a use for the car any longer.
The last month my wife has been using the car to go to work just to make sure everything is working as it should after so long without use. Everything is fine.
I have all the MOT’s done on the car since September 1995 and the stamped service book full of recognised jaguar specialists down south and a local garage I used here up until about a decade ago. The last few years I’ve been doing the basic servicing myself. The oil I’m currently using is a semi synthetic 15/40 oil. Bearing in mind the jag is doing next to no mileage at present its oil changes are based on timescale rather than on mileage covered.
This jaguar has a personal plate that goes with the car. The number is SXI7282. I put this number on the car 12 years ago. The registration number is currently valued at between 400 and 500 hundred pounds before transfer fees depending upon where you look.
The engine starts first time every time and is quiet, smooth. The 4-speed auto gearbox with torque converter lock has a J gate so you can leave her in auto or change the gears yourself if that takes your fancy. It’s a switchable sport autobox. In the sports mode the car really flies holding on to each gear for optimum performance with the kick down being as sensitive as a trip wire. In normal mode the car will change up to the tallest gear as soon as possible and at 54 mph the toque converter lock engages for a direct drive. This keeps the revs right down when cruising and effectively feels like she slips into a 5th gear. The car does about 22 to 24 mpg running about and can nudge 30 on a long run.
The car has central locking, electric windows, electric mirrors, electric boot release, illuminated vanity mirrors & anti-lock brakes (ABS). It does not have air conditioning or an alarm system fitted which is not a bad thing considering the cost of maintaining these units. The steering column is adjustable is adjustable for reach. She also has a trip computer, which is quite handy for MPG etc.
The car is insured on a classic car policy and has a current agreed value certificate for £4000 from the insurance company. I also have the previous valuation from the J.E.C two years previous, which valued the car at £4500. Both valuations will be supplied to the new owner. Peace of mind to know your 20-year-old classic car is insured for the correct value should the worst happen.
A car like this should be driven not parked in a garage. I’ve got too many cars and don’t have the time of inclination any more for her. So she has got to go. This is a classic well maintained Jaguar. If your looking for a cheap smoker with lots of work needing done then this car is not for you. I’ve had the car for 12 years and it’s the best your going to find anywhere as it needs nothing done at all. This car is a stunning XJ40 example.
The car originally left the factory with Westminster Blue Paintwork. When I bought the Jag in 1997 she was already gleaming Flamenco Mica Red. At some point prior to 1995 somebody went to a lot of expense and had the car resprayed in Flamenco Mica Red. It’s a top class job that was done with all the glass and trim removed from the car. The paintwork makes the car look really fresh and youthful All the M.O.T’s I have back to September 1995 show the car as Red.
I replaced the Jaguar Radio Cassette shortly after I bought the car with a face of Sony system which cost about £140 at the time. The car has six speakers and the stereo was wired to four of them so the guy told me when he fitted but he was a bit lost with the jaguars wiring. This could be rectified if somebody so wished.
The interior of the car is full grey leather with lots of wood veneer. The leather is in great order with only a very light wear mark on the drivers seat bolster caused by getting in and out of the car. There is a very small area of leather about 2cm by a millimetre on one of the seams on the rear seat where the surface leather is cracked slightly (Its hardly noticeable as it right on a seam as his highlighted in the photo). It’s been like that since I bought the car and I am being very over critical. If it needed replaced or repaired it would have been done already bearing in mind I used the car for Wedding Hire.
The car is as good as your going to get any year of XJ40 and has had a lot of money spent on her over the years. There is no rust on the bodywork of the car. The paint is absolutely gleaming all the way down to the sills. The underneath is solid. The Rear Suspension arms are solid. The Rear (A) Frame is Solid. The front Cross Member is Solid. The chrome work is good. The wheel covers are in excellent order having been refurbished a few years ago. I also replaced the centre dishes of the covers with new factory items with new Jaguar emblems fitted as the old ones were bleached by sun. The front tyres have 7mm of tread and the rear tyres have 4mm of tread. The tyres are Dunlop Sport SP2000 390mm metric tyres, which cost around £200.00 each new.
This classic Jaguar is 20 years old. And although it’s in fantastic condition is it not a new car so please bear this in mind. Having said that she looks like she rolled out of the factory last year rather than two decades ago and driver like a modern car. The performance and ride is exceptional and she will hold her own with modern cars no problem.
Maintenance and Refurbishment Work Carried Out
I am going to summarise the more expensive items of repairs or replacements over the years that I have supporting receipts for though there has been lots of bits and bobs that I am sure has been overlooked. I will supply the new owner with photocopies of the receipts for the below work totalling £2153 for their records.
Bonnet replaced with new factory item in 2002. Cost £440 to buy and a further £500 to paint. Total £940 Old bonnet was starting to blister from the inside out on the front edge of the bonnet so there was no point re-painting the old bonnet as it would just rust through again. I had to bite the bullet and fit a new bonnet be done to keep the old girl looking her best for the weddings. If your looking at one of these cars and see paint blisters 9 times out of ten the corrosion is coming from the inside of the panel and should not be looked upon lightly no matter what bull the seller tells you.
Headling was replaced with new factory item in 2005, as the old one was starting to sag slightly and looked unsightly. It’s a common problem with these cars as the foam between the fibreglass spectre and the headlining breaks downs after years of hot and cold conditions. To have the headlining replaced the windscreen had to be removed. Had this done by the RAC. I fitted the headlining myself and the RAC fitted the screen. Job Well Done. At about £353 for the headlining + £41 for fittings and £90 to the RAC Windscreen fitter its not a cheap fix at £484.00. If any older jag has not had its Headling changed its more than likely its going to need doing relatively soon as its only a matter of time till it starts to sag.
A Frame Bushes were replaced in 2007 as they were perished and affecting the smooth ride of the car. I supplies the Bushes and the labour cost £86
Floor to Sill Seam Repairs where the floor pan ties into the sills was showing sign of corrosion back in the 2005 & 2006 M.O.T’s so I decided to have the problem rectified. It’s a very common problem on the XJ40 and X300 Cars. The corroded metal was cut out from front to back of the car the length of the sills and new sheet steel was fabricated and welded into place behind the sills by a professional garage before the sills were re-sprayed and lacquered. This cost me a pretty £643 price tag and that was with me supplying my own labour to assist as the welder’s mate fabricating the repair panels and cutting out the corroded steel.
The new 1.2mm sheet metal repairs were hand painted with black smooth coat hammerite inside. The metal repairs underneath were painted and then undersealed before the whole underside of the car was wax-oiled using black wax-oil. To keep the car rust free underneath she should be wax-oiled once a year if it’s getting used regularly. It’s just been done again at the beginning of the year when it was M.O.T’d
There are sill drains behind the sill edge that should be kept open at all costs. If they get blocked with underseal or muck any water cannot flow out and just accumulates causing corrosion and very costly interior out restoration project. I should know as I have three of these cars and all of them have had this problem addressed while I have owned them. If you’re looking at one of these cars try to get underneath it and have a good poke about using a screwdriver directly behind the sill edge. Any corrosion here is an expensive interior out restoration project so its likely if its not been done its going to be needing done which is worth a thought before buying one of these lovely cars.
Other Bits and Bobs I don’t have receipts for.
Jaguar Radio Cassette replaced with Sony Face off Radio Cassette.
The Electric Ariel mast was replaced with a new factory item as it was sticking
Refurbishment of Wheel Covers and Replacement Centre Dishes and Jag Emblems.
Replaced the Sun visors for Second hand units when the headlining was replaced.
Replaced the Centre Consul Ski Slope and Ashtray as the veneer was starting to crack a little on the wood.
Replaced all four headlights for new Cibie units, as the reflectors were really dull and looking their age in contrast with the look of the car.
The Bad Points about the car
There is a very slight weep from the seal where the prop attaches to the differential. When I say weep I mean weep not drip. I do mean really slight and on annual inspection it does not even require a top up of the diff at all. The car was like this when I bought it and I replaced this seal twice in the first couple of years I owned her but it still wept though its not developed any further in the past ten years. The upside to this is that the very fine mist of gear oil throw from the prop onto both rear exhaust boxes means they look like new. Again I am being very over critical of this Jaguar.
Closing Statement
This XJ40 is in A1 condition. You will not find a better car from 86 to 94 and remember this is the first run of the 4.0 XJ40 under Ford Ownership that greatly improved the build quality of these cars. Grab yourself a piece if motoring history that will last you for many years to come provided you look after her like I have done.
I have described the car as honestly as I can. Probably if you looked over the car in great details you might find a stone chip here and there that’s been touched in but that going to be about it. But believe me you will need to look pretty hard. I don’t think there is a single stone chip on the bonnet for example.
Warranty
There is No Warranty implied of given with this Jaguar.
I’ve done my very best to give a good photographic and written representation of this beautiful car in this advert however if I have overlooked anything please feel free to ask.
Viewing the Car
You are welcome to come and view the car by appointment. If you would like to look under her I can jack her up or reverse her onto a pair of my ramps. The interior carpets can be lifted for inspection of the floor pan etc if you should so wish. You’ll find everything I have said is correct.
Test Drive
You are not insured to drive my Jaguar so if you want a test drive I will drive and you will be passenger. If you can purchase or provide insurance cover for the day and are able to show me the insurance policy cover you are welcome to test-drive the car provided I am accompanying you.
